Swine Flu
Al Parker
I guess it's time for us to talk about the swine flu since it seems to be the only thing on the news these days. What is swine flu? It is an influenza caused by any strain of the flu virus found in swine(pigs). Swine flu is common in pigs but is rarely found in humans. Swine flu can mutate into a strain of the virus that is contagious in humans. That is believed to be what has happened in the recent outbreak of swine flu that has occured in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. People who work with poultry and swine are at risk of infection with influenza from these animals if the animals carry a strain that is also able to infect humans.
Symptoms of Swine Flu:
Swine flu and regular influenza are very similar in that they have most of the same symtoms. One major difference is that most people have diarrhea or vomiting with the swine flu. This is very uncommon with the regular strain of influenza except in children.
What are some of the things we can do to prevent catching the flu? The best thing you can do of course is to stay away from people who have it, but that's not always possible because you don't know who may have the virus. There are of course ways to boost your immune system. There is always the old stand by vitamin C which is known for boosting the immune system. A natural product that has shown tremendous ability at preventing influenza is colloidal silver.
Three herbs known for their immune boosting powers are echenecia, goldenseal, and astralgus. Of course wash your hands regularly and keep plenty of hand sanitzer near by. Don't let the media scare you with their nightly reports of this outbreak. They have a tendecy to sensationalize everything. Just do the things you do during the regular influenza season and you should be fine.
